“This is a movement about change, as individuals, as a country and as a global community.” – Laurie David
What better way to celebrate Earth Day 2014 than to hear from a very down-to-earth environmental activist.
Laurie David doesn’t mince words about what on earth we’re doing to the planet and ourselves. For more than a decade, she has been tackling the most pressing issues of the day, forcing us to pay attention to the air we breathe and the food we eat.
Her mantra? If you’re part of the problem, (and aren’t we all?), then you must be part of the solution. And Laurie has really stepped up to the plate.
In 2005 she founded the Stop Global Warming Virtual March. With nearly a million and a half marchers already in its ranks, StopGlobalWarming.org engages religious leaders, sports figures, elected officials, business leaders, and every day Americans to demand that Washington act to reduce carbon dioxide emissions now.
In 2006, she collaborated on the Academy Award-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth, which helped ignite the green movement in America and which she followed up with the bestselling book, Stop Global Warming: The Solution is You! and the children’s book, The Down to Earth Guide to Global Warming.
And with her insatiable appetite for activism, Laurie also has her fingers in another pie -- the American way of eating. “If you care about the planet,” she says, “you are going to realize that every issues crosses the dinner plate.”
This week, following up on her popular book “The Family Dinner,” which called on parents to bring back the time-honored ritual of the family dinner hour, her new book, THE FAMILY COOKS , is being published on Earth Day. It is described as a call to action for parents, kids, and anyone who eats, to start cooking their own meals again. “If you don’t make it yourself,” she says, “you don’t know what’s in it.”
And Laurie is fed up with what’s in the food that fills our grocery store shelves.
In fact, FED UP is the title of a new documentary premiering in early May which Laurie executive produced with journalist Katie Couric.
FED UP sets out to uncover the causes of America’s childhood obesity epidemic, who is behind it, and what can be done to fix it. It promises to be an eye-opening and controversial expose.
As an environmentalist, author, producer, blogger, and mother of two daughters, Laurie David has a full plate. Now she invites YOU to take a seat at the table and join the community that is working to set the planet and its people on a healthier and sustainable course.
